All users of Globe Apartments' Internet services (the "Services") agree to and must comply with this Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Globe Apartments do not exercise editorial control or review over the content of any website, electronic mail transmission, newsgroup, or other material created or accessible over or through the Services. However, Globe Apartments may remove, block, filter, or restrict by any other means any materials that, in Globe Apartments' sole discretion, may be illegal, may subject Globe Apartments to liability, or which may violate this AUP. Globe Apartments may cooperate with legal authorities and/or third parties in the investigation of any suspected or alleged crime or civil wrong. Violation of this AUP may result in the suspension or termination of either access to the Services and/or Globe Apartments’ account or other actions as detailed below. This AUP should be read in conjunction with our other policies all of which are posted on our website at www.globeapt.com.
The following constitute violations of this AUP (this list is intended to be illustrative and not exhaustive; other uses may violate the AUP and Globe Apartments remain the sole and final arbiter of acceptable usage of its Services):
a. Illegal use: Using the Services to transmit any material (by e-mail, uploading, posting, or otherwise) that, intentionally or unintentionally, violates any applicable local, national or international law, or any rules or regulations promulgated thereunder.
b. Harm to minors: Using the Services to harm, or attempt to harm, minors in any way.
c. Threats: Using the Services to transmit any material (by e-mail, uploading, posting, or otherwise) that threatens or encourages bodily harm or destruction of property.
d. Harassment: Using the Services to transmit any material (by e-mail, uploading, posting, or otherwise) that harasses another.
e. Fraudulent activity: Using the Services to make fraudulent offers to sell or buy products, items, or services or to advance any type of financial scam such as "pyramid schemes," "Ponzi schemes", unregistered sales of securities, securities fraud and "chain letters."
f. Forgery or impersonation: Adding, removing or modifying identifying network, message, or article header information in an effort to deceive or mislead is prohibited. Attempting to impersonate any person by using forged headers or other identifying information is prohibited. The use of anonymous remailers or nicknames does not constitute impersonation.
g. Unsolicited commercial e-mail/Unsolicited bulk e-mail: Using the Services to transmit any unsolicited commercial e-mail or unsolicited bulk e-mail. Activities that have the effect of facilitating unsolicited commercial e-mail or unsolicited bulk e-mail, whether or not that e-mail is commercial in nature, are prohibited. Using deliberately misleading headers in e-mails sent to multiple parties is prohibited
h. Unauthorized access: Using the Services to access, or to attempt to access, the accounts of others, or to penetrate, or attempt to penetrate, security measures of Globe Apartments' or another entity's computer software or hardware, electronic communications system, or telecommunications system, whether or not the intrusion results in disruption of service or the corruption or loss of data.
i. Copyright or trademark infringement: Using the Services to transmit any material (by e- mail, uploading, posting, or otherwise) that infringes any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, or other proprietary rights of any third party, including, but not limited to, the unauthorized copying of copyrighted material, the digitisation and distribution of photographs from magazines, books, or other copyrighted sources, and the unauthorized transmittal of copyrighted software.
j. Collection of personal data: Using the Services to collect, or attempt to collect, personal information about third parties without their knowledge or consent.
k. Network disruptions and unfriendly activity: Using the Services for any activity which adversely affects the ability of other people or systems to use Globe Apartments’ Services or the Internet. This includes excessive consumption of network or system resources whether intentional or unintentional. This also includes "denial of service" (DoS) attacks against another network host or individual user. Interference with or disruption of other network users, network services or network equipment is prohibited. It is the user's responsibility to ensure that their system is configured, operated, and used in a manner to avoid excessive consumption of network or system resources. It is the user's responsibility to ensure that their system is configured in a secure manner. A user may not, through action or inaction, allow others to use their system for illegal or inappropriate actions. A user may not permit their system, through action or inaction, to be configured in such a way that gives a third party the capability to use their system in an illegal or inappropriate manner.
l. News: Globe Apartments users should use their best judgment when posting to any newsgroup. Many newsgroups have charters, published guidelines, FAQs, or "community standards" describing what is and is not considered appropriate. USENET can be a valuable resource if used properly. The continued posting of off-topic articles is prohibited. Commercial advertisements are off-topic in most newsgroups, especially regional groups not specifically named for such. The presence of such articles in a group is not indicative of the group's "intended" use. Please be familiar with basic USENET "netiquette" before posting to a newsgroup.
m. High Volume, Server Hosting, and non-traditional end user activities: The Services are intended for an end user's periodic active use of email, instant messaging, browsing the World Wide Web, and other typical end user activities. High volume data transfers, especially sustained high volume data transfers, are prohibited. Hosting a web server, IRC server, or any other server is prohibited. Accordingly, Globe Apartments maintains the right to terminate any user's connection following the detection of any high volume data transfer, server hosting, or non-traditional end user activity as determined by Globe Apartments.
Globe Apartments requests that anyone who believes that there is a violation of this AUP direct the information to: .
If available, please provide the following information:
* The IP address used to commit the alleged violation
* The date and time of the alleged violation, including the time zone or offset from GMT
* Evidence of the alleged violation
When reporting an issue regarding unsolicited e-mail please provide a copy of the e-mail messages with full headers which typically provides all of the above data. Other situations will require different methods of providing the necessary information.
Globe Apartments may take any one or more of the following actions, or other actions not listed, at Globe Apartments' sole discretion in response to complaints:
* Issue warnings: written or verbal
* Suspend the Member's account
* Terminate the Member's account
* Bill the user for administrative costs and/or reactivation charges, with a minimum administrative cost, if assessed, of £100 per incident
* Bring legal action to stop violations and/or to collect damages, if any, caused by violations.
Globe Apartments reserve the right to revise, amend, or modify this AUP, and our other policies and agreements at any time and in any manner. Notice of any revision, amendment, or modification will be posted on Globe Apartments' website and will be effective as to existing users 30 days after posting the same.
Globe Apartments Security Information and Liability Disclaimer
Globe Apartments provide public access to the internet. There are potentially serious security issues with any computer connected to the internet without the appropriate protection. This can be true of connections made through a wireless network, a cable modem, dial-up access or otherwise. These security issues range from viruses, worms and other programmes that can damage the user's computer to attacks on the computer by unauthorized or unwanted third parties. These parties, known commonly as "hackers" may attempt to penetrate the user's computer and download information from the user's computer.
If the user has unprotected files on the computer, these files may be visible to hackers on the internet, potentially including parties with criminal intent. Hackers also exploit vulnerabilities in operating systems to cause malicious damage to a user's computer or even a whole company's network, up to and including the destruction or deletion of files or the re-formatting of drives. It is recommended that the user uses either a personal firewall or Virtual Private Network systems to protect this information. Globe Apartments advise the user that he/she should consult a security expert to determine whether there are any potential security holes in their computer's configuration.
EACH OF GLOBE APARTMENTS, THE OWNER AND MANAGER OF THE VENUE AT WHICH THE INTERNET IS ACCESSED SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY LIABILITY FOR UNAUTHORIZED THIRD-PARTY SECURITY BREACHES OR THE RESULTS THEREOF. GLOBE APARTMENTS PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE INTERNET AND THE GLOBE APARTMENTS NETWORK ON AN "AS IS" BASIS WITH ALL RISKS INHERENT IN SUCH ACCESS. BY CONNECTING TO THE GLOBE APARTMENTS NETWORK, THE USER ACKNOWLEDGES THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE INTERNET AND HEREBY RELEASES AND INDEMNIFIES GLOBE APARTMENTS, THE OWNER AND MANAGER OF THE VENUE AT WHICH THE INTERNET IS ACCESSED, AND ANY AFFILIATE OF THE FOREGOING PARTIES FROM ANY DAMAGES THAT MIGHT OCCUR.
For your information, we have set forth some common security problems. Please note that this list is not intended to be exclusive, and new security risks are being developed on a daily basis. Here are some common risks:
Packet sniffing:
In certain configurations, every packet of information on the internet can be "sniffed" by a third party. In the case of a wired network connection at a Globe Apartments facility, the packets are on a switched network. This prevents packet sniffing on the Globe Apartments network. However, in a wireless connection using IEEE 802.11b wireless (commonly known as Wi-Fi), packets can be "sniffed" by someone on the wireless network with the appropriate software. This allows the hacker to see every piece of information that the user sends across the network. There are two precautions that you can use to protect your information.
1) Do not send any sensitive information including passwords, credit card or other sensitive information using a wireless connection.
2) Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPNs encrypt all of the information sent by the user, so the information is useless to a hacker.
Net Bios:
One of the most dangerous problems with internet access is Net Bios access. This is a serious security hole that can enable third parties to "scan" every file on your system. Net Bios runs on port 139. Globe Apartments blocks this access from outside sources, but within the property from which you may be using the Globe Apartments access, Net Bios cannot currently be blocked locally while still allowing the system to function properly.
This means that someone could be on the property scanning your files. Net Bios is required for certain useful things such as file sharing and network printing, but you can take advantage of these features without opening a security hole. There are several things that you can do to protect yourself against this attack.
1) Turn off file sharing. If you have file sharing turned on, then other people on the network can view the files on your computer.
2) Encrypt or protect sensitive files with passwords. Many programmes offer the ability to password protect the file before opening. If a hacker is able to get access to these files, then they would not be able to open the files without a password.
3) Disable Net Bios enabled programs. There are some programs that enable Net Bios that are not required for common use on the internet. There are several sites such as "Test my Shields" at https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 that are helpful in testing security holes and educating users on how to protect themselves. We suggest that you check with your company network administrator first, so that he or she will be able to specifically advise you on this matter and will be made aware of a change in settings that you are effectuating.
Note that security on the internet is a rapidly changing landscape. New attacks are springing up all of the time. Globe Apartments recommend that you consult with your company's security experts to ensure that your computer is protected when you are on the internet. Note that these security holes exist not only on public access networks provided by Globe Apartments, but also on any internet system such as a DSL or Cable Modem connection in your home or office. The suggestions given herein are provided as a courtesy, and do not replace specific personalised advice provided by your network administrators, company computer security personnel or other security experts with whom you may be working.
